Five years ago ten year old me decided to go for a walk. I always hated wearing shoes when I went out to play so I was in shorts and a tank top, no shoes or socks. At first I went behind my house and laid on the big hill looking at the clouds seeing what shapes I could find in the fluffy white looking cotton candy. A bunny, a mermaid, a puppy, a star, a ship, and I remember it being the first time I saw a dragon. When I saw the dragon I got so excited I could not sit there any longer, so I went further behind my house to the line where the yard met the woods.
As I entered the enchanting woods, the leaves changing was mesmerizing. Fall, being my favorite season, was just around the corner. The leaves changing, the temperature chilling, and the wind picking up. Feeling the twigs break under my bare feet was one of my favorite feelings, as I ran through the woods zig zagging in between the dying trees. Picking up the falling leaves trying to catch them before they fell, just a game I played if I was bored. Suddenly in the midst of my pretending I heard my name being called.
I made an about face and ran home, my mother was calling because my cousins had came over. When I got to the house and my mother saw that I did not have shoes on she made me go in and put my boots on and made me promise not to take them off. Once my boots were on she sent the three of us kids back outside to play. When we got behind the house before we went to go into our secret kingdom of pretend, I took my boots off and sat them by the tree. My cousins looked at me in surprise because they heard me promise that I would not take them off. I said it was no big deal.
We were laughing and yelling being the happy little kids we were when suddenly I felt a slight discomfort in my foot. I brushed it off as nothing because I step on things all the time. Finally after twenty five minutes of running our short little legs got us to the field just beyond the woods. We dropped to our butts when we got to the middle. We did some cloud watching when my younger cousin pointed out the hay was red around my foot. My older cousin and I took a look and I had cut my foot and the red was from blood. They both started freaking out and yelling at me saying they knew I should not have taken my boots off.
After about fifteen minutes of calming them down and convincing them not to tell my mother, we started off for home because it was getting dark. When we got back to my boots, I spit cleaned the blood off my foot and then squeezed my feet back into my boots. We casually walked back to my house as the stars started appearing and my mother just started to holler for us to come home. When we got in she told us to go clean up because she made us food. When we went up stairs I opened three band aids to put on my foot and some socks to hide the band aids.
The next morning my foot hurt so bad I could barely put any weight on it and it was very red and gross looking. My cousins said I should tell my mom, but I refused because I did not want her to know I took my boots off. Over the next week I tried to hide it and take care of it, which did not work out so well. I finally could not take the pain anymore and showed my mother. She was so angry I did not tell her and took me to the emergency room right away. The doctors had to cut into my foot deeper than the cut to get the infection out and then they had to give me six or seven stitches.
When we got home my mom asked me why I lied about it. I told her I did not want her to get mad at me for taking my boots off. She said she was only mad because I made my cousins lie and I did not tell her I broke my promise. She said she was not going to punish me because she thought I had learned my lesson. She said having a scalpel stuck into your foot at ten years old for lying about getting cut on a broken pop can was enough torture.
I lied like three times in that one week because of my foot. I regret this lie a lot because I have a divot in my foot from where they had to cut and it sometimes still hurts. The doctors told my mom that would happen when they did this five years ago.
