Money Tension
Money is the root of all evil. Money is everything. Without money we would have nothing. Sentences we hear from the time we are little. A certain tension always surrounds the concept of money. Money is always associated with the bad things- greed, lust, poverty, etc. And, when money is for the good no one usually notices. So why not write about more of the bad stuff.
A lot of sibling rivalry occurs in my family and that always seems to be where the tension arises. When you come from a large family drama is not a rare occurrence. When the argument is over money it is still not as rare, but it is more rare than the other things to argue over.
A time a large argument over money occurred in my large family was over my great grandparents’ farm. My great grandparents own a large seventy acre farm and another one hundred acre patch of land. As my grandparents are growing older they needed to let their land to someone. The heir to the land became my the youngest of their sons. This upset their oldest son very much and he got so upset he stopped speaking to his parents.
In the midst of this mess my uncle’s wife was having a similar problem with her parents. She asked her parents for money to help with some problems her and my uncle were having. When her father refused her request, she stopped speaking to him.
My uncle was so upset over the fact that he was passed up for the land. He could not understand why my grandparents would not give it to him, seeing how he was first son born and all. While being the first son my grandparents had told us grandkids why they really chose my younger uncle.
Throughout these two arguments I, even as a young child, learned some important lessons. First money is not a reason to stop speaking to my parents for fifteen years even on their deathbed. Also jealousy can be the worst ruiner. I learned these lessons at a young age and because of that money is a strange topic for me.
