The author or essayist's job is to make the material they are writing about interesting. The material already exists the author just has to recreate rather than make up like in a fictional writing. Things to focus on while writing nonfiction as a narrative:
Character- You are both the author and character.
Dialogue- Writers could be referred to as professional eavesdroppers as Kim Stafford states. Using what they hear to put into their creations.
Scene Setting- Most crucial element; you must let your "readers know right away where you are, who is involved, and what is at stake".

Fourth element of creative nonfiction writing is the poetry that goes into the writing. Metaphors, similes, and strong diction. To help enhance your poetic abilities try listening or reading poetry to see and hear the sound of flowing words. Pay extra attention to how you write and the words you are using to describe. Figurative language, diction, and sound & rhythm are the topics to focus on when writing poetic pieces.
