People in a Car (#6)
As the sun rises and the orange glow peeks over the horizon, five people climb into the creme colored Dodge Ram Hemi truck. A full cab and an empty bed allows for shopping space. Being barely six O’clock, the truck’s engine roars as they head to Cleveland, Ohio. With the early start no one has to worry about stopping until we get there.
Everyone sleeping soundly as the trucks vibrations lul them to sleep. Everyone except father. Father occupied the driver’s seat. As his family was dreaming away, he was wide awake seeing the beauty in the sunrise as he drove along the interstate. No other vehicles in sight except for the occasional semi-truck. Father’s mind drifted off as he drove. The peacefulness of the quiet cab and vacant roads made it easy for his thoughts to drift. He thought back on how he took trips like these every weekend with his family. It was never quiet, they were a rowdy bunch who enjoyed car games when they got bored such as- ispy and the alphabet game.
At one point in the trip the truck slowed to a stop, causing everyone who was still asleep to awaken. They had reached Cleveland. Nine O’clock, the first stop they made was to get food at a quaint little restaurant. During this stop, everyone went to the bathroom and got some surprisingly delicious food. By ten thirty, they were back on the road heading to the zoo. The children’s anticipation and excitement growing with every mile closer. The zoo was in sight and the children let out little shrills of joy. The zoo had taken up six hours, although no one noticed the time flying by because of the amount of fun they were all having.
After the zoo it was time for a dinner stop and another bathroom break. This time instead of stopping at restaurant they are not used to, they just agreed on Burger King. At about seven thirty they were back on the road for a long trip home. Mother now occupying the driver’s seat, was reminiscing the day’s activities. Enjoying the thoughts of her children getting along, not a single argument had broke out the whole road trip. Mother was the quieter of the parents. Her thoughts were more hard to figure out. While you could tell this was a woman filled with happiness, you could not see the reason behind it.
The youngest of the children already sleeping again from the long day of playing and running. Her face lighting up at every animal reaching out to them calling to them with the sounds of a child barely able to talk. As she dreamt of the day, it was as though you could see the images playing on a movie screen over and over of the joy filled day. The young girl’s first zoo trip caused excitement for everyone. Even to her year older brother, who was at first angry for keeping our final destination a secret. Once the final destination was revealed to their young souls, they were ecstatic and seemed like brand new pieces of paper waiting to be written upon.
Lastly the only person who never falls asleep during the night rides, the eldest daughter although twelve still enjoyed the great family day. As she watched the sun set and the moon rise, she could not help but smile. The moon was bright the stars brighter as she tried to count them all. Her mind wandering amongst the stars like the cow jumping over the moon. A weekend that had no mention of school or stress. A perfect day filled with perfect creatures. Her flashbacks as vivid as though she was still standing in front of the enclosures.
Finally home, as mother and father carried the youngest two inside to carry them up the stairs and place them in bed, they chatted about the amazing day and how this should become a casual occurrence. The young preteen stood in the dewy grass looking up at the constellations thanking God for the best day in a while.
